Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the Mexico part of the latest Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo.

The war against the people continues to escalate across the country, while the technocrat government of Claudia Sheinbaum systematically denies it. Recently, the organization Las Abejas de Acteal reported new armed attacks in the community of Tzajalch’en, Chiapas, carried out by a narco-paramilitary group, as well as the arbitrary detention and cutting of communications of a member of the organization and a representative of the community authority by elements of the State Prosecutor’s Office and the police force known as “Pakal.” Following these aggressions, during a community prayer event held on June 14, the Tzajalch’en community denounced that fears of an “armed attack or possible massacre” by the criminal groups operating in the region.

In this war against the people, transnational companies play a central role, protected by the lackey governments of our country. Militarization, paramilitarism, and the use of criminal groups have spread throughout Mexico to impose the interests of imperialism. According to a statement from the Assembly of Defenders of the Maya Territory Múuch’ Xíinbal, the federal government and the brewing company Heineken are planning an investment of over 2.7 billion dollars in Mexican territory, which includes the establishment of a brewery in the community of Kanasín, Yucatán. The Assembly stated that it is unaware of the supposed “indigenous consultation” that the former governor of the state allegedly conducted in December 2024. “In an announcement from the “Circus of the People” on June 11, the general director of the European company Heineken stated that “we must take advantage of the infrastructure and connectivity of the southeast,” clearly referring to the construction of a freight train for the benefit of neoliberal companies. The president has repeatedly claimed that neoliberalism is over and belongs to previous regimes, so WHAT KIND OF NEO-LIBERALISM IS THIS?

In response to this war against the people, popular masses are organizing and resisting. An example of this is the democratic teachers gathered in the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), which initiated a national strike and maintained a sit-in at the Zócalo in Mexico City from May 15 to June 7, pausing the strike to enter a new phase of resistance, this time calling for a boycott of all public events held by Sheinbaum in every state of the country. The first to fulfill this task were the members of Section XV in the state of Hidalgo, who on June 13 attended an event of the technocrat from the Morena party in the municipality of Santiago Tulantepec. As she was about to start her speech on the “Malestar” programs and her lies about social security, the education workers interrupted her with slogans like “Neither UMAS nor AFORES, a solidarity pension system!” and displayed banners demanding the repeal of the EPN-AMLO educational reform and the 2007 ISSSTE Law.

Actions like these clearly demonstrate the steps that the struggling people must take. It is important for workers and communities to emphasize the need to build a United Front against the war on the people and State terrorism. Unity with principles and unity in action!
