Brazil: LCP Denies Responsibility for the Ambush in Rondônia

On April 14, an attack took place that resulted in the death of one civil police officer and left four others wounded on the NorBrasil estate in Rondônia. We reported on this attack yesterday:

The National Commission of the League of the Poor Peasants (LCP) denied responsibility for this attack, according to A Nova Democracia (AND). The peasant organization explains as follows: “The attack was orchestrated by the far-right landlords of Rondônia, with the participation of the deposed commander-in-chief of the Military Police, the murderer of the poor, Colonel Braguin, who still actively participates in extermination squads that attack peasants and the poor with the aim of criminalizing the sacred struggle of poor peasants for land and demonizing the LCP.”

The LCP denounces that the attack was carried out by a paramilitary group that “seeks to usurp control of the Tiago Campin dos Santos area and intimidate the peasants.” This attack serves the purpose of

criminalizing the LCP and deploying greater resources against the organization of poor peasants in the countryside of Rondônia, as Braguin himself demands.

The LCP has issued a statement describing those who carried out the ambush as “an armed group of degenerates and lumpen,” a “gang of traitors,” who have long been terrorizing the residents of the area, driving peasant families from their land and issuing death threats against those who defend the LCP. Thus, the peasant organization denies any connection to the incident and to those who carried out the attack, who are confronting the peasant masses in the struggle for land in the countryside of Rondônia.
