Peasants organized under the Landless Rural Workers’ Movement (MST) held a demonstration last Friday, April 17, in Santa Helena do Goiás (GO), as part of a series of nationwide demonstrations in memory of the victims of the Eldorado dos Carajás massacre. During the demonstration the national coordinator of the MST was detained by the Goiás Military Police, A Nova Democracia (AND) reports.

We recently covered another one of these demonstrations:

The detainment took place as the Military Police were called to clear the road where the demonstration was taking place, where the police proceeded to carry out excessive violence in order to detain the demonstrators.

The military police of the state of Goiás are already known for their violence against the masses and their subservience to the state’s latifundium, as the state is governed by a big landlord, Ronaldo Caiado. It is not uncommon for officers of the old State apparatus to be paid by large landlords to act as hired goons, in addition to engaging in other criminal practices, such as torture.
