The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, had a meeting – that was called in extremis – with representatives of more than 60 countries from the Americas, Asia and Europe to speak about the renewed threat against imperialism: the resurgence of anti-imperialist and communist movements, among others.

According to Rubio, the resurgence of the “far left”, as they state, is a “real and transnational threat” which has increased in the last years, and demands an international architecture to combat it. They can call themselves anti-capitalists or anti-imperialists, or communists, or anarchists, or Marxists. But the fundamental character is always the same”, Rubio states.

According to A Nova Democracia (AND): “The US intends to map militants, their activities and international connections, disrupt financial flows and expand repressive mechanisms beyond national borders. The meeting also discussed information sharing between intelligence services, police cooperation and the classification of organizations as ‘terrorist’.”

Among the actions of these groups, the Secretary of State highlights attacks against pipelines, railways, electric networks, laboratories and other strategic areas. Additionally, he roots for a greater cooperation across State borders because of the the international work of these groups, cooperating among different countries and continents. As the bourgeois press underlines, this cooperation among the States will increase research resources – among them surveillance – increase the “material support”, and increase the exchange of information among the intelligence organs.

In the program A Propósito de AND, that you can watch on Youtube or listen to on Spotify, the new measures are explained as a “preventive counter-revolutionary policy”, and not just agitation towards the next elections in the US. A representative of AND also explains that by using broad terms such as “political terrorism”, “narcoterrorism”, “guerrilla narco war” and “transnational crime”, this allows imperialism to hide their true intentions: “Instead of openly declaring war against anti-imperialism, clearly and unequivocally, Washington is trying to link the revolutionary and popular forces with drug trafficking and other criminal activities.”

During the program it is stated: “Trump is right: the revolutionary movement has come back to the world and threatens their interests.” The representative of the AIL – Section Brazil, highlights that in the current context, the establishment of the International Anti-Imperialist League represents a victory of the organization and international coordination of the forces against imperialism.

On the increase of repression, he states: “Counterinsurgency policies may intensify investigations, surveillance, arrests, persecutions, and interventions in the short term. However, they are not capable of achieving strategic success because the intensification of oppression deepens the contradictions that produce mass rebellion.”
