Mexico: Weekly Newsletter
We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the latest Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo on August 31.
The past week has been marked by intense agitation and propaganda in various parts of the country, announcing the demonstrations on August 30, the International Day of the Detained-Disappeared, particularly to demand the presentation alive of Dr. Ernesto Sernas García, a member of Sol Rojo who was disappeared by the Mexican government on May 10, 2018. On our platforms, we have reported on some of the preparatory actions, both at universities such as the UABJO (his alma mater and place of work), the UNAM, and the UACM, as well as in various parts of Oaxaca and Mexico City.
Finally August 30 arrived, and with it, the call to “Flood the streets and squares with red flags” was fulfilled. In both Oaxaca and Mexico City, Sol Rojo contingents took to the streets in a united and combative manner alongside other democratic and revolutionary organizations, as well as sister unions and collectives of Searching Mothers.
At both demonstrations, red flags were unfurled, graffiti was painted, and posters were put up highlighting that there are more than 135,000 persons disappeared in the country. The posters featured the face of Dr. Ernesto Sernas García alongside the international campaign hashtag #DrSernasPresentaciónConVida and the slogan “They took him alive; we want him back alive!” In both Oaxaca and Mexico City, the demonstrations reached the Zócalo (Main square), where rallies were carried out in front of the seats of the executive power, denouncing forced disappearances as State crimes.
We will soon share a detailed report on the various actions taken. For now, we can conclude that the marches in Oaxaca and Mexico City have been an example of unity and struggle among the various organizations searching for our comrades who are victims of forced disappearances in our country.
