Germany – Dem Volke Dienen: First Notes on the Elections in Saxony-Anhalt
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by Dem Volke Dienen on September 7.
The pig’s pen that is the bourgeois parliament, was newly elected in Saxony-Anhalt. To leave no room for any confusion, one point should be emphasized:
No matter what color they may have: Pigs are pigs!
Down with the new government of Saxony-Anhalt!
This applies to this election, like it does to any bourgeois election: Revolutionaries and communists have to deliver blows to the pseudo-legitimization of the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie (the bourgeois elections are nothing more than this!) and can never allow themselves to be aiding them, or in convergence with them.
Important numbers of these elections are:
1. Participation
The electoral circus that the bourgeois parties staged for these local elections was surprisingly big. There was unusually ample propaganda for a local election in the bourgeois media, even the chancellor himself thought it necessary to warn people from voting for the AfD, and it was even reported on internationally.
The image created by this propaganda was obvious – either a break with the current order or a breakdown, according to the respective preferences of the factions of the German imperialist big bourgeoisie and their media. Those who wanted to vote “against the system”, “against the government”, “against those up there” or “against the established parties” should vote for the AfD or BSW. All other parties fight for the votes of those who wanted to prevent the “taking of power by the AfD” or the “rise of fascism.” Even bourgeois parties not even participating in the elections, like the MLPD, propagated “democracy or fascism” and correspondingly called for voting for one or another bourgeois electoral club.
Correspondingly the rulers were able to realize a strong mobilization and raised the electoral participation to 77.8% (as compared to 60.3% in 2021). It was the highest participation since the annexation of the GDR by the FRG in Saxony-Anhalt. It is notable that the CDU was able to mobilize 30,000 non-voters. The AfD mobilized 170,000 non-voters and even the FDP, which has been falling into obscurity, was able to mobilize non-voters.
The AfD is currently expressing its role for the German imperialist big bourgeoisie to increase the apparent “legitimization” of their rule, by directing the justified anger of the vast majority into parliamentary ways and by provoking mobilizations to the electoral urns against them.
2. The CDU was halved
The current chancellor took office with the announcement of “halving the AfD”. The opposite is seen one and a half years after the federal elections. 83,000 voters went straight from the CDU to the AfD. With losses of around 20% in total, the CDU under Friedrich Merz has been halved and gained only about 17% of the votes. The non-voters were a bigger group. The AfD has become the biggest force in all municipalities. The AfD was especially able to gain the votes of 65% of those who view their financial situation as bad. Should the AfD not take over the government, they will be able to continue to present themselves as a bourgeois party for the “small people,” the workers, the poor, and the discontent.
3. Crisis of social democracy
The crisis of social democracy finds a notable expression in the local elections in Saxony-Anhalt. Especially notable is that the Left-Party was not able to generate a similar mobilization in Saxony-Anhalt against the AfD against “fascism” that takes places on a federal level. Contrarily the Left-Party lost 2.5% in their worst result in a federal election in Saxony-Anhalt.
The representatives of the SPD who actually celebrated their results (around 9%) for having been the third biggest force (actually they are fourth after AfD, non-voters and CDU) is telling about the state of this bourgeois party claiming to be a “party of the people.”
Conclusions:
Finally a scenario presents itself in which – at least according to the pronouncements made before the elections (which are not worth anything) – there can not be a government formed in Saxony-Anhalt.
The CDU has decisions of incompatibility with the AfD and the Left Party, and even if they now try to ingratiate themselves to the CDU, a coalition with either of them under the leadership of Friedrich Merz is unlikely.
The AfD itself has declared that it would only govern alone and that it would not lead a minority government – which is obvious considering that the party benefits from not having governed and therefore not having exposed themselves before the masses.
There is an immediate crisis of government in Saxony-Anhalt, also because with the new election of the ministerial president, the current government cannot continue operating properly as the FDP is no longer present in parliament.
Decisions of big relevance can no longer be made in the state without the AfD. Also because of this, the bourgeois politicians and parties have brought up the possibility that the federal government could depose a local government and impose a commissary government.
No matter which “solution” will be presented by the rulers in the end, the situation after the elections remain under stress for the coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD ruling at the federal level. It is unlikely, that the current government, with its current composition, will survive the results of the local elections in Saxony-Anhalt, as well as the other upcoming local elections. Should they do so, their room to maneuver will be limited by this weakness.
Together, the SPD and CDU reached around 20% of eligible voters of Saxony-Anhalt, which is several percentage points lower than the non-voters.
It is becoming ever more clear that those on top cannot go on ruling as before, and those below do not want to continue as before, even if this expresses itself in voting for an ultra-reactionary party like the AfD. Accordingly, the elections in Saxony-Anhalt do not worsen the conditions for the revolutionaries in this country, they improve them.
Finally we want to underline what we stated initially:
