As of the end of September, the last US-troops have officially left Iraq as a result of the fierce resistance during 23 years of invasion.

Already in the first eight years of the invasion from 2003 to 2011 around 114.000 civilians were murdered through direct military action. Many more deaths came at the hands of the destruction of infrastructure and the embargo. 2011 then marked the first retreat, but in 2014 troops returned under the guise of combating ISIS.

However this war of terror they called “war on terror” was never able to break the resistance against the invasion. The culmination of the defeat of the invaders is now added to the long list of US-imperialism failing to meet their self-proclaimed military and political goals and comes at a time where once again the struggles are increasing in the entire region.

In an article analyzing the retreat, A Nova Democracia (AND) summarizes:

“The US withdrawal adds Iraq to the list of major strategic defeats suffered by Yankee imperialism in the last five years. After the expulsion of troops from Afghanistan in 2021, and the setbacks imposed by the resistance wars in Palestine and Iran, Washington is now ending its military presence in the country whose invasion in 2003 symbolized the arrogance of the so-called ‘war on terror.’ Iraq thus becomes yet another expression of the exhaustion of Yankee imperialism’s capacity to impose its political and military objectives by force on oppressed peoples and nations.”
