Mexico: Mural Newspaper Issue #29 Editorial
We hereby share an unofficial translation of the latest editorial by the Mural Newspaper published on June 3.
The contradictions within the big bourgeoisie continue to intensify, as the structural crisis of bureaucratic capitalism deepens. The link between the two is dialectical, and the main beneficiary, so far, remains US imperialism.
In an attempt to mitigate its effects or throw up a smokescreen for the population, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (CSP), the current agent of the old State, strives to project the opposite every morning during her press conferences, presenting the image of a strong economy and government. However, the reality is far from that in every respect.
Economically speaking, a quick glance reveals how inflation in our country (4.45%) is driving up prices for monthly expenses, directly impacting the pockets of working people. During the month of April, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) identified rising prices for vegetables, legumes, and fruits as the main trend, in addition to rent, public transportation, and fuels such as diesel, premium gasoline, and LP gas.
Furthermore, what is technically known as “economic development” is in free fall, as evidenced by hard data such as the 0.8% decline in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is reflected in three sectors of the economy: 1) the primary sector, with a 1.4% decline in agriculture; 2) Secondary sector, with a 1.1% decline in manufacturing and maquila (translator’s note: a factory that is largely duty-free and tariff-free. These factories take raw materials and assemble, manufacture, or process them and export the finished product); and 3) Tertiary sector, with a 0.6% decline in services.
These are just figures, but there is no doubt that what is happening in these sectors directly impacts the pockets of the popular masses.
On the political front, the federal government foresees the risk of possible US interference in the 2027 federal elections, and to that end is proposing a constitutional amendment to Article 41 in order to be able to declare the elections null and void in such a scenario. This is something that has happened many times in the history of our country, and in the recent history of Our America, and although it is true that the coup-plotting right (PRI-PAN-MC) is weakened and lacks the electoral relevance necessary to claim victory in advance anywhere, it is also not true that Morena is “stronger than ever.”
Now, following the accusations leveled by the US State Department against Rocha Moya, Inzunza Casazares, and other Morena politicians, as well as the operation in Chihuahua involving CIA agents, the risk of interference has intensified. The summit dubbed “Shield of the Americas,” which brought together eleven puppet governments under Donald Trump’s command, speaks volumes about this. How many of those unpresentable figures achieved their victories thanks to US interference?
But let no one be mistaken. The governments of the self-proclaimed “fourth transformation” are not victims, but culprits, and today they are paying the price for allying with the devil. To understand this better, we must look back a little, to the 2018 presidential elections, when the bureaucratic bourgeoisie struck a deal with US imperialism to ensure the electoral victory of opportunism, recognizing its utility in preventing a social uprising. Back then, AMLO was merely a safety valve, and since then, the Morena governments—particularly that of CSP—have continued to serve the interests of their masters, allowing greater US interference in our country, all while juggling patriotic rhetoric that falls far short of a genuine defense of our national sovereignty. One need only examine the development of the relationship between the US and Mexico during the current federal administration.
As we said at the beginning, the main beneficiary of all this, so far, remains US imperialism. But we must view things through the lens of the proletariat; the old Mexican State is weakening in this cycle, and with that, its contradictions with the masses are intensifying, opening up the possibility of transforming the crisis into a revolutionary situation.
This presents the proletarian class with the task of taking advantage of all these contradictions, without fearing the explosions and upheavals they may provoke. Doing so implies building organization and more organization, forged in the heat of battle. Today, the call for a boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup launched by the CNTE and backed by various organized sectors of the people serves as an inspiration to millions of oppressed and exploited people in our country by bringing to the forefront the need for a General Strike of National Resistance against the old State and imperialism, and the possibility of winning new victories in the streets for the workers and peoples of Mexico.
Dare to struggle, dare to win!
