Brazil: Mobilizations for the Construction of Popular School and Call for Seminar on the Struggle for Land

Workers and residents mobilize for the construction of a popular school in the working class neighborhood of Goiânia
AND reports that representatives from the People’s Women’s Movement (MFP) and the Worker’s League (LO) together with workers from the Class-conscious Movement of Education Workers (Moclate) joined residents of Jardim Novo Mundo II, a working class neighborhood in Goiânia, for the construction of the Novo Mundo School of Popular Mobilization.
The meeting took place at the former Residents’ Association of Jardim Novo Mundo and was opened by the organization’s former president, who recounted the history of struggles in the region and recalled achievements such as paving, public transportation, a health center, schools, and other fruits of popular mobilization and struggle.
During the speeches, participants denounced the neglect of the Amendoeiras Health Center by Mayor Sandro Mabel, who ordered the closure of emergency and urgent care services in October 2025. The nearest emergency care unit is more than five kilometers away and, according to complaints from healthcare workers, was already facing overcrowding, lack of supplies, medicines, and professionals. The workers also took the opportunity to denounce the closure of classes in the Youth and Adult Education (EJA) program at the Senador Darcy Ribeiro Municipal School.
The meeting was preceded by distribution of leaflets among the residents, in which the popular and independent nature of the school they intend to build, free from electoral political parties, was explained. According to members of the LO and Moclate, the construction of the Popular School does not aim to passively compensate for the omissions of the old State, but rather to create a space for mobilization and organization to denounce its absence and mobilize the masses to take into their own hands the education and rights that have been denied to them.
AND reports that, during the meeting, the four central operational pillars of the School were structured:
Political Education and Discussion Circles: organizing regular discussion groups to analyze current events, revisit the history of workers’ struggles, and discuss social rights.
Supportive Educational Services: tutoring activities in mathematics, reading, science, and general knowledge, aimed at children and teenagers.
Practical, Scientific and Cultural Workshops: offering body and integrative practices, such as chess, arts, circus and self-defense classes.
Community Library: a space to encourage reading, research, and the preservation of popular culture.
AND concludes its report, stating: “The Novo Mundo School of Popular Mobilization is thus born as yet another trench erected by the workers’ own hands. Alongside other experiences of Popular Schools built by popular movements, it reaffirms education as an instrument of social transformation and strengthening of the working class, and renews the commitment of the working-class neighborhood of Jardim Novo Mundo to its own history.”

A Nova Democracia (AND) has also shared a call for the II Seminar on the Struggle for Land, which took place on September 14, at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul in Campo Grande (UFMS). The seminar was organized by the Support Committee for the NationalAction Group of Campo Grande and the Group for the Study of International Politics (GEPI), under the title “II Seminar on the Struggle for Land in Brazil: Long Live the 10th Anniversary of the Battle of Caarapó.”
