On July 2nd, the International Anti-Imperialist League (AIL) Section Brazil carried out an event in Rio de Janeiro, addressing the beginning of a new period of struggle against the imperialist machine’s exploits in Brazil and in the world, A Nova Democracia (AND) reports.
The event gathered around 50 people, including organizations such as the Brazilian Association of People’s Lawyers (ABRAPO), Brazilian Center for Solidarity with the Peoples (CEBRASPO), National Executive Committee of Pedagogy Students (ExNEPE), the Committee of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, and the Arapuka Collective.
Initiating the event was a discussion from the panelists on the topic of the role of the AIL in the new period of anti-imperialist struggles in the world, emphasizing the need of an organization to forge an alliance, a front that links People’s Wars, links national liberation revolutions, and can confront what is today the main enemy of the peoples and the oppressed classes: imperialism. The panelist representative of CEBRASPO exposed the failure of the general counter-revolutionary offensive of imperialism, highlighting its three major defeats in recent history: in Afghanistan, Palestine, and Iran.
After the panelist discussion, several participants took the floor, among them a participant from ExNEPE, who read an open letter to the Committees of Solidarity with Palestine throughout Brazil. The letter commended the wave of solidarity with the Palestinian people that has risen throughout the world, and condemned “PSTU-PE [United Socialist Worker’s Party – Pernambuco], MRT-PE [Revolutionary Worker’s Movement – Pernambuco], PCBrasileiro-PE [Brazilian Communist Party – Pernambuco] and other opportunists” for acting as agents of the old State. In relation to an incident that took place in a demonstration in January, the opportunists accused Mangue Vermelho and Movimento Ventania of being responsible for an incident related to an incendiary bomb without any proof thereof, AND reports.
Participants also took the floor to praise the League of the Poor Peasants (LCP) and the agrarian revolution as the most advanced anti-imperialist struggle in Brazil. Concluding the event was a call from ABRAPO to support the campaign for the freedom of the lawyer Dr. Lenir Correia, who was arrested for doing her job, and has since been kept in inhumane conditions and even had her medication confiscated despite being a recently amputated diabetic, emphasizing once again the importance of supporting the agrarian revolution.
