Sol Rojo reports that after an over 15 year long struggle, defender of the rights of the people Pablo López Alavez has been released from his arbitrary detention after a long and arduous campaign led by his wife and several organizations, marking a victory for the popular movement in Mexico.

Pablo López Alavez is a Zapotec democratic activist originally from San Isidro Aloapam, Oaxaca. On August 15, 2010, he was arbitrarily detained and tortured by a group of armed goons without an arrest warrant, for an alleged act of manslaughter. Since then, he has received no fair trial, but after 14 years of illegal detention he was handed a fabricated sentence of 30 years. The campaign for justice and freedom for Pablo has fielded a long and hard struggle for the popular movement in Oaxaca. His wife, Yolanda Pérez Cruz, along with organizations from Oaxaca, Mexican and international civil rights groups have fielded this struggle for the last 15 years, and finally, on March 27, 2026, Pablo was released following a ruling by the appellate division of the Superior Court of Justice of the State of Oaxaca.

In a joint statement, in which Front of the People – Red Sun is one of the signatory organizations, demands are made of the Federal Judiciary to conduct a thorough review of the case, evaluating how a ruling detaining Pablo for 15 years could be made without a solid foundation – it was even proven that Pablo was elsewhere at the time of his alleged crime. Further demands are made that the democratic rights defender must receive a full acquittal and reparations for the harm caused. This harm includes the forced displacement of his family, due to threats faced because of their ardent struggle for justice, which has had profound impacts on their well-being and health. The signatory organizations demand guarantees from Mexican authorities that this does not repeat itself and demand the investigation, prosecution and punishment of the authorities responsible for the serious violations committed against Pablo, as well as against his family and the organizations who have stood by them.
