Denmark – Roede Fane: The Racists Were Met With Resistance
We hereby share an unofficial translation of a report published by Roede Fane on August 7.
On Saturday, September 5, racists and fascists took to the streets during a “remigration march” organized by the fascist group “Det Danske Folk”.
The group had done everything in their power to mobilize for their march, with a broad disinformation campaign with AI-generated content over Facebook in particular, well backed by an army of bots and fake profiles.
The organizers had hoped for 7,000 participants in their march, but on the day itself, only around 500-700 people showed up for the racist rally, consisting of Rasmus Paludan and his callous friends, Iranian Zionist monarchists, other reactionary elements, and Nazi hooligans.
Nevertheless, this is a modern record in terms of attendance at a far-right demonstration in Denmark, as previous neo-Nazi demos have attracted a maximum of around 300 participants at one time.
The far-right demonstration was notably characterized by 40-60 masked neo-Nazis, who, among other things, threw flares and tried to attack the anti-racist counter-demonstration, which had attracted at least twice as many participants as the Nazi demonstration.
Some elements of the racist demonstration were strangely shocked to find themselves suddenly in the same demonstration as neo-Nazis throwing fireworks. The police, however, did almost nothing to stop the Nazi hooligans other than arresting one single person.
In addition to the anti-racist demonstration, which had drawn as many as 1,500 participants, a united front of anti-fascists had blocked the route to the British Embassy on Classensgade to slow down and prevent the neo-Nazi demonstration. There, the anti-fascists chanted slogans such as “No fascists on our streets!” and sang songs like “Bella Ciao.” Banners with slogans such as “Together against racism!,” “Down with Danish imperialism!,” and “No fascists on our streets!” were waved during the demonstration. However, it wasn’t long before the Copenhagen Police’s “Unit 12,” without warning, launched a violent attack on the otherwise peaceful anti-racist blockade with furious blows from their batons.
Several activists have reported that the police deliberately targeted protesters’ heads and joints. Several anti-fascist protesters were hospitalized and a small handful were arrested by the police.
The anti-fascists managed to withstand the first waves of police frontal attacks with batons, but the police were determined to move heaven and earth to ensure that the neo-Nazis could walk the streets undisturbed. The police rerouted the Nazis away from the blocked section of Classensgade and, through repeated barrages of baton blows and assault charges, managed to break up the blockade.
The bourgeois media has been quick to potray the anti-fascist counter-demonstrators as extremists, even though it was the police who initiated the violence and the Nazis who were walking around giving the Nazi salute. The double standard between the Nazi demonstration and the demonstration of those who wanted to resist the fascists is completely laughable and takes the hypocrisy to an even higher level. If the police had not been present, the fascist cowards would not have dared to take to the streets because of the popular resistance against them.
Although the blockade was broken, the Nazi march was disrupted enough to shorten its route. The Nazi march stopped at Axeltorv, where the organizers declared their intention to organize a new march on October 17.
The Nazi march for “remigration” is a direct reflection of the rhetoric and lies being spewed from Christiansborg. If you ask yourself what is really worsening people’s living conditions, you have to look at the falling real wages, inflation and welfare cuts, all taking place to benefit the country’s wealthiest capitalists. Blaming so-called “criminal immigrants” for their problems makes these Nazis the henchmen of Danish imperialism, hiding behind the armor and shields of the police.
The day ended in a moral defeat for the police, who found themselves protecting the Nazis while allowing them to roam around freely in masks and throw fireworks at people in the streets of Copenhagen. The day was a moral and political victory for the anti-fascists, revealing the true character of the police and showing that the Nazis are outnumbered and that Copenhagen does not stand idly by when they take to the streets.
When the Nazis resurface on October 17, more resistance will certainly be organized, and the fight will continue until all fascists have once again been removed from the city’s streets.
