A Nova Democracia (AND) has reported on a demonstration in defense of the Gurupi river that united more then 10 villages of the surrounding area. The protest was organized by the Popular Committee in Defense of the Gurupi River and led by the Union of Communities in Struggle (UCL). The protest united at least 180 people in 15 motorized canoes. As such the peasants took to the river in protest.

In speeches the intents of robbing the lands surrounding the river – as well as the effects of monopolistic mining companies – were denounced. The peasants also denounced attacks they experienced by goons of the latifundium in their history of struggle.

AND reports that five pedagogy students from São Luís also joined in the protest, as well as members of the Popular Peasant Movement (MCP) of Maranhão, the Gurupi Environmental Association, and the International Anti-Imperialist League (LAI), accompanied by the National Executive of Pedagogy Students (ExNEPe), the Maranhão Executive of Pedagogy Students (ExMAEPe), and the Student Collective Sons of the People (CEFP).
