AND Editorial Board’s family’s home bombed in Gaza

We publish an unofficial translation of an article by A Nova Democracia:

In August, the Zionist occupation of Gaza destroyed the home of doctor Soma Baroud, located in the city of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, through aerial bombardments. Soma only recently discovered the destruction.

Soma Baroud is the sister of Dr. Ramzy Baroud, an American-Palestinian academic and journalist, Editor of the Palestine Chronicle and member of the Editorial Board of AND .

The destruction was yet another crime by the Zionist occupation that affected the Baroud family. At the beginning of the war, Soma’s husband, a university professor for more than 30 years, disappeared and has not been found to this day; he is on the list of more than 10,000 missing people in Gaza, many of whom are presumed dead as a result of Israeli aggression.

The Palestine Chronicle reported that the doctor did everything she could to protect her family and her home.

Soma Baroud and her son, Yazan, denounced the crime of aggression in two texts published on the Palestine Chronicle website . She emphasizes that it was “three decades of life, of memories, of achievements,” and “everything turned into rubble.”

A video recorded by Yazan captured scenes of his home and neighborhood being demolished by the Israeli regime.

Returning to the moment when he saw the house in ruins, Yazan reports that “when I arrived at our old neighborhood, I got lost. I couldn’t recognize anything. The landscape had changed. I walked in several directions until I settled on the place where our house should have been.”

“Once I got my bearings with the changes resulting from the Israeli destruction of the area, I found the pile of rubble that is, or was, our home.”

“I recognized it because of a small area in the yard where my father had planted Christmas trees. Although everything was destroyed, one small tree was still standing.”

Among the lost belongings were photographs and scraps of paper with the writings and drawings of Soma’s children. “The very details of my husband’s life, whether he was martyred or still missing, only God knows, were all there. I wanted to keep everything exactly where he left it before the war,” Soma details.

The crime against Soma adds to the other figures of the Zionist genocide in the Gaza Strip, responded to day after day by the popular, political and armed actions of the Palestinian people and their organized National Resistance.

Since October 7, the Israeli regime has murdered 40,786 Palestinians, left 94,224 injured and 10,000 missing.
