Another Murdered Peasant in Brazil. The War Against the People Continues
On 20th of September we reported on the murder of a Guarani-Kaiowá peasant by the Military Police. This murder took place when peasants tried to retake their lands, stolen by the latifundium together with several brigades of the police, who patrol the lands 24 hours. When the retake of the land was going on, the Military Police used life ammunition to try to stop the peasants, who did not give up, and one of them was murdered by those shots.
Today we know by A Nova Democracia that other Guarani-Kaiowá peasant, Fred Morilha, a boy only 16 years old, have been murdered. The young man was found on 23rd of September in a secondary highway in the Indigenous Land (IL) Nhander Marangatu, where the first murder took place.
The General Assembly of the Kawiowá and Guarani people, Aty Guasu, denounces the murders and attacks against Guarani-Kaiowá in LI Nhanderu, where the State forces serves the latifundium. In a letter they demand the old Brazilian State and international organism to take measures.
One more time the war against the people, specially against the poor peasants, that is taking place in Brazil sharpens. Every time the news on attacks are more and more violent, being reported two murders in less than a week in the same LI, where state police still patrols the latifundium of Luana Ruiz, one of the main political representative of the latifundium in Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), adviser of the Civil House of the Government of the State of MS and first alternate of congress by the Liberal Party.
One of the demands is more presence of the National Force, a group that, theoretically, serves to defend peasants from illegal evictions of land. However, as AND reports, it costed more than 5 millions Reais since Luiz Inácio Da Silva sent the troops to the region and the result, far from protecting the indigenous, was the seizure of two guns, seven bullets and a tobacco loan between February 2023 and June 2024.
Additionally, when they must defend the peasants, the National Force is not only useless, but also they ran away from their obligations and abandoned the peasants in front of the goons. A month before the attacks to the Guarani-Kaiowa in southern MS, between the 4th and 5th of August an assault was carried out by paramilitary bands at the LI Panambi Lagoa Rica, in Douradina, also in Mato Grosso do Sul, where the Federal troops abandoned the LI without justification. The result was 11 injured Guarani-Kaiowá indigenous by hits and gunfire in the head and neck, in addition to post-traumatic stress. The indigenous denounced that it was a coordinated action of the latifundium and thugs of the region, who even tried to set ablaze the camp of poor peasants that were in solidarity with the Guarani-Kaiowá. The federal government did not do any declaration after their troops abandoned their task of protecting the peasants in front of the illegal evictions.
During a visit to the attacked LI, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, said that the correct was to “list both parts [big landlords and indigenous]” because both “have the right to make their demands”.
