Yesterday it was reported that University Delhi professor GN Saibaba passed away just few months after being released. He passed away in Hyderabad, being murdered by the old Indian State, as his health condition was seriously effected after the unlawful imprisonment and torture which he faced. His legacy as a democratic rights defender, as a revolutionary intellectual and people’s movement leader will remain forever in the memories of the peoples of the world, specially in the memory of the Indian people.
We hereby share an unofficial translation of a statement issued by the Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners – West Bengal (CRPPWB).
Delhi University professor GN Saibaba, a newly released political prisoner, gave his last breathing today at 8:36 pm while undergoing treatment at NIIMS, Hyderabad.
GN Saibaba was acquitted of all charges by the Bombay High Court in March 2024 after being imprisoned for ten years on false charges of Maoism. Professor GN Saibaba, was physically handicapped by almost 90%, was imprisoned in the notorious Anda cell of Pune Jail for 10 years. All efforts were made to finish him off physically. He was denied access to minimal medical care. After his release from jail, he was undergoing treatment for various physical problems. But due to being imprisoned for a long time, the physical condition went to a deplorable level. He gave his last breathing during treatment today1. Prof. GN Saibaba died due to the ruthless torture by the State. GN Saibaba’s murder is murder by the State.
We on behalf of the CRPP (WB) Branch condemn this State judicial structure where an innocent person was subjected to extreme physical and mental torture and murder after framing a false case for ten years.
Prof. GN Saibaba, hardworking, struggled for the oppressed people throughout his life. Even in the face of extreme oppression by the State, he constantly struggled for the rights of political prisoners in prison. We will not forget Professor Saibaba’s contribution in the history of rights movement.
Our condolences to Saibaba’s family on behalf of CRPP (WB).
Professor GN Saibaba is immortal.
