Interference of Yankee imperialism in Colombia: The Constitutional Court, with the complicity of the Petro Government, gives way to a new Yankee military base

The Constitutional Court repealed the ruling of the Superior Court of Bogotá that stopped the project of the Navy Forces and the Ministry of Defense to build a coastguards on Gorgona Island. The ruling took into account the prior consultation with the communities that live in surrounding areas. With this revocation, the Constitutional Court paves the way for Yankee imperialism to build another of its military bases in our country.

As we previously reported, this project was decided during the Juan Manuel Santos government in 2015. In 2019 they finished the construction of a surveillance tower and in 2022, with the Petro government already in office, they began the construction of the buildings and a fuel tank. All this in the name of the struggle against drugs, which has already proven to be actually a war against the people.

Different environmental activists and the indigenous communities of Guapi have mobilized since 2015 against this project, as it represented a great ecological threat to the biodiversity that exists on the island and, in that sense, is also a threat to the work of the population of the area who, most of them are fishermen. Furthermore, they have denounced that this is a military base that serves the interests of the United States and that threatens national sovereignty.

Despite the fact that the laws allow it to stop the construction of that project, the Gustavo Petro government has not spoken about it and continues to allow the blatant interventionism of Yankee imperialism in Colombia. Additionally it is obvious that Gustavo Petro’s environmentalist speeches, so widely publicized during COP 16, is subject to the dictates of Yankee imperialism, since this military project is a clear attack on the country’s biodiversity.

Recently, activists who defend the conservation of Gorgona Island have demonstrated against this military project and have announced that they carried out more mobilization actions and call on the Colombian people to mobilize against this interference by the United States in Colombia.
