Brazil: Two events; one report, one upcoming

Between November 14 and 15, there was the 1st Meeting of Youth of the Suruí-Aikewara People in the Yeta village of the Sororó Indigenous Land in Pará.
The event had as its theme “Identity and Resistance: Weaving Networks in the Guarantee of Rights”. The purpose was to discuss important matters today to boost the struggle of the Suruí-Aikewara People related to other struggles in conflict with the State in this region.
The event was marked by a strong spirit of unity. The issue of the territory was addressed, as the Suruí are struggling for the resumption of part of the territory that was stolen by the old Brazilian State.
Also were present professors from the Federal University of South and Southeast of Pará (Unifesspa), the Federal Institute of Pará (IFPA), the State University of Pará (UEPA), besides various movements and peoples entities, the leader Katia Silene of the Akrãtikatejê village and a chief of the Xikrin People. The activities took place with self-organization and support from peasant institutions, with guaranteed food and a lot of cultural activity. The organization of the 2nd Youth Meeting and the 3rd Meeting of Women was set, among other definitions. Participants paid tributes to the memory of the leader Tireé Suruí, who died on March 16, 2023.
From November 25 to 28, the Federal and State Universities of Maranhão will host the Symposium “The Struggle for Land in Maranhão”. The event will address violence in the countryside that has only grown in the State and, for this, it will bring together militants and leaders of the struggle for land in Maranhão, as well as the participation of teachers, researchers and students. The event is to promote a space for dialogue and analysis, discussing both the history of the struggle for land in the State and the ways of facing current challenges. The A Nova Democracia Support Committee is part of the events’ organizing committee, along with other political entities.
