Paramilitaries execute a 17-years old boy in Brazil

A Nova Democracia (AND) has reported on the execution of a boy, Fábio Freitas Corrêa, occurred on February 5. The boy was inhabitant of Vila Kennedy, favela of the western area of Rio de Janeiro. The boy moved to Bangu, another neighborhood of the western area of Rio de Janeiro, to visit some relatives. Once there, he went to buy refrigerant and on his way back, he was executed by paramilitaries who were in their vehicle in a Bangu’s square.

The boy was part, among other projects, of a cultural collective, the Movimento Desabafo Urbano (MODU), which is involved in artistic production and movies production. The collective denounced this brutal crime committed by the paramilitaries. The residents of Vila Kennedy carried out a protest the same day, and was accompanied by collectives such as Voz da Vila Kennedy and movements such as Coletivo Cultural Renato Nathan (Corena).

The neighbors denounce how the paramilitary groups of Vila Kennedy and the region of Jardim Bangu and Catiri are in a state of war for the territories. The region is marked by the rule of criminal groups which control the life of local masses, violate their rights and impose illegal taxes to the neighbors and merchants.

The relation between these groups and the Military Police (MP) are well-known, for example the former chief of the paramilitary group of Catiri, Marquinho Catiri, was murdered by police officers who integrate another criminal group, among them, Rafael do Nascimento Dutra, a MP of the 15th Battalion, and other military member, currently detained and under investigation because of the death of Marquinho, because he carried restricted ammunition and loaders. The Vila Kennedy neighbors have denounced that the MP carries out its operations in the neighborhood to facilitate the entrance of more paramilitaries into the favelas and they expel the group which currently rules the neighborhood.

AND reports that “These relations are important because they point to the State’s responsibility in supplying paramilitary groups, the ongoing reactionary war and the murder of workers and students of the favela.”
