Spanish State: Statement for the 1st of May of 2025

We hereby share an unofficial translation of a statement which we found published here.

Down with imperialism!

Let’s recover a combative working class movement!

We take to the streets once again this 1st of May to honor the struggle of the Martyrs of Chicago, labor leaders who led protests and strikes for the eight-hour workday. The bourgeoisie and the State responded to the 1st of May protests of 1886 by imprisoning and hanging them. But their memory lives on in all workers around the world.

Today, as the great bourgeoisie of the world beats the drums of war for a new imperialist division of loot, as they call for rearming armies and increasing military budgets to wage their imperialist wars of aggression, it is more important than ever to assume as ours the example of the Martyrs of Chicago.

Spanish imperialism exploits millions of workers and popular masses around the world, but within its borders, it also squeezes every last drop of blood and sweat from the working class. The monopolies in banking, energy, construction, infrastructure, telecommunications, and others—the great capitalists, in short—exploit us in every possible way. They use the State, their political tool, to repress us during evictions, union blockades, and protests. They use their spokespersons, the major media outlets, to tell us that no alternative is possible. They use employers, their public representatives in the labor world, to worsen working conditions. They use the policy of subsidies and institutional aid to weaken unions, pulling them away from the streets and into offices, creating a layer of bureaucratic sellouts, agents of the employers within the labor movement, who are the complete opposite of the spirit of the Martyrs of Chicago.

And despite all the attacks from imperialism, the working class continues to struggle! There are still combative strikes that achieve significant victories, mass evictions that are halted, and demonstrations of tens and hundreds of thousands.

Revolutionary workers, combative workers: we must step forward and learn from Palestine. We can and must fight more and better. We are capable of anything! We need to build a strong, combative, solid labor and union movement, consistently anti-imperialist, to confront the great capitalists of Spanish imperialism, who exploit us and all our class brothers in other countries. Let us honor the Martyrs of Chicago with our struggle.

Learn from the Palestinian struggle!

For a combative working class movement!

For an anti-imperialist 1st of May!

Workers of all countries and oppressed peoples, unite against imperialism!
