Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico in the latest Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo.

The Morena governments in Mexico City and Oaxaca pretend to come from the people’s movement, and with that refrain, they negotiate with the right-wing day in and day out. Let’s examine the situation: 1) Clara Brugada, the current head of government of Mexico City, was part of the People’s Revolutionary Union Emiliano Zapata (Uprez) and the Coordinadora Nacional del Urban People’s Movement (Conamup). However, she has taken various fascist measures against people’s movements in the city, such as her most recent order to remove various anti-monuments in light of the 2026 World Cup, considering them “red points or sites of tension that need to be deactivated.” This refers to the Square of Women Who Struggle, the Square of the Disappeared), the memorial for the Kindergarten ABC, the memorial for the 43, among others. In this context, just a few days ago, the memorial for the 43, which contains photographs and information about each of the missing students, was attacked. Meanwhile, the comrades from the Square for the Women Who Struggle have demanded that the city government halt this order… “We ask that you do not yield to the pressures of a voracious capitalism and reverse that order; what was said there is very serious, wanting to erase memory is characteristic of the far-right because the defense of memory is a commitment to the Truth.”

2) Salomón Jara, the current governor of Oaxaca, was part of the Democratic Peasant Union (UCD) and has mentioned that he also “walked with other social movements” in the State. However, his anti-popular policies increasingly divorce him from the people, as demonstrated by the formation of the para-police force “Topiles for Peace” (violating the autonomy of indigenous peoples), or his intentions to tax communal lands through the “program of legal certainty” (to dismantle the social property of land), or the political use of yellow unions that operate as shock troops against any opposition (be it popular colonies, independent artisans, organizations, or the very Section XXII of the CNTE), the unprecedented increase in reactionary violence with feminicides, murders, and disappearances everywhere, as well as the imposition of mega-projects of dispossession and death fulfilling the agenda dictated by imperialist powers and superpowers. Just today, the Attorney General’s Office of Oaxaca announced the discovery of the remains of feminist defender Sandra Estefana Domínguez Martínez and her partner, who were disappeared on October 4, 2024; in this regard, the Komite Pejy Tyotk has issued a statement also informing about the discovery… “After 206 days of distress, endless nights and a tireless struggle in demand of her return, we confirm that we found Sandra. It was not the ending we dreamed of, but at least those who loved her profoundly can take a rest… Sandra was not only a victim of this system of violence and impunity, she will always be recognized as a tireless fighter.”

It will be important to observe the development of the contradiction between the masses and the old State in both entities, as it serves as a thermometer to interpret the development of class struggle in the country. For now, combative mobilizations are expected on the upcoming 1st of May, 10th of May 10, and 15th of May, the first for International Workers’ Day, the second by the Collectives of Mothers and Searching Families, and the third by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), which has agreed to initiate its national strike on that day.

Whoever rules, the rights of the people must be defended!
