Chile: Peasants Take Lands in the Region of the Maule

We hereby share an unofficial translation of a report published by the Newspaper El Pueblo in its Facebook account:

In the Hualañé corner sector of the Hualañé commune, Maule region, a group of residents has decided to take some lands. This situation has directly clashed with the interests of the current municipal mayor, Carolina Muñóz (DC), and other big landlords in the area.

The residents claim that they have ancestral documentation that proves their legitimate rights, in contrast to the mayor’s statements, who has relied on her entire municipal network and access to local media to stigmatize and label the inhabitants of the area as engaging in an “illegal occupation.”

As an independent media outlet, we interviewed the residents and will soon amplify their statements.
