Ecuador: TO THE ECUADORIANS AND THE MEMBERS OF THE PARLIAMENT OF PACHAKUTIK (CONAIE)

The traitor who betrays traitors, gets 100 years of forgiveness”

The statements by Leónidas Iza relating to the decision of some members of the parliament (MP) of Pachakutik, working with the government of Daniel Noboa, reflects the despair of the leader of the CONAIE for “regaining” political spaces, after his clumsy and daring decision to participate in the electoral circus.

The main problem is not Pachakutik and its political representatives in the Assembly, — or in any other instance of the bureaucratic apparatus of the State – they position themselves with the most reactionary element of the society. The true problem is the fact participating in the democratic game without any correct comprehension of what is the democracy and to whom it serves and for what cause.

Pachakutik made us being used to these political maneuvers: pyromancers, nationalists, in some cases more radical, but also servile to the imperialism, the big bourgeoisie and the big landlords.

Iza, in the CONAIE’s statement is labeling the “political error” that the MP’s of Pachakutik are aligning themselves with the government. For him it is just an “error”, he doesn’t see it as a ideological problem, but as a circumstantial act, an error that finally anyone could commit. Neither he recognizes it as a legislative agreement, but as “the selling of the dignity of the peoples in exchange of a quota of ephemeral power”.

And here we go again. Iza does not understand. His limited understanding of Marxism, and above all, of Mariategui, does not allow him to see, that possessing the quotes of administration of any kind of instance of the old State does not mean possessing power. No that’s not how it works. Those who own the big means of production, those who designed the State as an instrument of domination against the broad masses of the workers and oppressed of the country, they have the power.

But not only that. He talks about ‘selling dignity in exchange for a quota of ephemeral power ‘; didn’t he do the same when his petty bourgeois vanity led him to run for president in the last electoral farce? Wasn’t he precisely seeking what he himself calls ‘a quota of ephemeral power’?

He dares to say that Pachakutik was born as “the voice of the excluded and as a collective project… we were not created to support governments that rely on marketing.…”. That is false. Pachakutik doesn’t arise as an idealized expression of what he is describing. It was born as a form of organization that was pushed forward by a group of young people that searched a political instrument with a bit more radical goals, yes, but how fast was it cooped by opportunists, and adapted to the political dynamic of bureaucratic capitalism.

Iza is the clear expression of the most sneaking and evil opportunism that exists. In the end, we all know how political clientelism, ideological weakness, and the level of shamelessness that characterizes Pachakutik operate. The list of miserable individuals who have sold themselves is long, not for ‘quotas of power,’ as Iza says, but literally for a ‘plate of lentils.’ His ‘skinny dog’ dreams led him to verse with the presidential band and declare the so-called “my power of the Constitution”.

Nevertheless, Iza as the continuator of Auki Tituaña, Vargas, Luis Macas, Blanca Chancoso, Nina Pacari, Quishpe and many other who today are part of the step back of history – is even more perverse and miserable. Why? Because these figures build their political platform on the struggles of the people, on popular uprisings, on the hundreds of dead, missing, mutilated, imprisoned, and persecuted. That is why they are more despicable.

In the end, while not any less contemptible, the ‘others’ are like cockroaches scurrying from corner to corner, looking for the crumbs regurgitated by the big bourgeoisie, the large landowners, and imperialism. “The traitor who betrays traitors, gets 100 years of forgiveness” seems to be the maxim that applies to the statements of Iza and the leadership of CONAIE.

Iza must understand this: he demobilized the people at the polls; he sold the struggles of the large majorities who believed in the well-intentioned purposes of combating the regimes of all kinds that, for decades, have done everything possible to exploit and oppress our people even more. Iza, with his hollow electoral pretensions, handed over the mobilization of the masses on a ‘silver platter’ to the fascism of Noboa, to the United States, Israel, and all those who sharpen their long knives to continue dismembering the people’s economy and the dignity of our peoples.”

If Iza speaks of dignity, he must come out and acknowledge that he was wrong, that his electoral adventure was a betrayal of the interests not only of the indigenous and peasant movement but of all the exploited masses in the country. Because, unfortunately, due to the lack of proposals from the conscious element of the class and the people, the indigenous movement was—until a few months ago—the organizational body that called for and led the people’s struggle. We do not claim that this is correct, but that was the real scenario. And it must be said clearly: those who must necessarily be at the forefront—in ideological and strategic terms—in the struggles of the class and the people are, definitively, the proletariat.

The fundamental force for the revolutionary transformation of society is the proletariat; because it provides the ideological leadership of the process; the main force: the peasantry. That is all.

Mr. Iza, your desperate call no to confront, but to “the conscience to reconstruct the hope in the truth”, is stopping it even more than it already is. You don´t conciliate with the traitors, the deserters: you smash them. But they are in the same pot as you, so we can understand your call.

What corresponds to us is insisting on in what we’ve been saying in our last pronouncements: we shouldn’t believe in healers, chiefs nor gamonals with feet of clay. We have to urgently reconstruct the unionist movement of the country, but also the indigenous, peasants and people’s movement. Not for those who’ll be in service of the old State, bureaucratic framework and of imperialism, but to fulfill the most profound aspirations of all of the consequent men and women of the broad majorities who demand to be freed from their pain, exploitation and to rebel.
