Mexico – Oaxaca: Current of the People Red Sun, 10 years later than the repression of 7th of June of 2015

We hereby share an unofficial translation of a call published by Newspaper Mural.

Since the beginning of the week, the members of Current of the People Red Sun from Oaxaca have launched a social media campaign in the context of the 10th anniversary of the repression on June 7, when more than 80 comrades were arbitrarily detained after responding to a call for a day of struggle organized by the CNTE, which was carrying out a national strike, and the National Popular Assembly, which demanded the presentation of the 43 missing students from Ayotzinapa. This occurred amid militarization and repression against electoral boycott actions and the rejection of the 11 counter-reforms by the regime.

In this context, the popular movement paid a high price, with more than a hundred political prisoners, dozens of injured individuals, and two teachers killed during the protests. For those who would later form the Current of the People Red Sun, this meant the incarceration of 23 comrades in medium and high-security prisons in Nayarit and Veracruz, and later in the Etla prison in Oaxaca. After 16 months of imprisonment, they were able to obtain conditional release, being fully acquitted by 2018.

Ten years after these events, the organization is launching a campaign to recognize the struggle of the families of the prisoners, the former inmates, and especially the solidarity, class-consciousness, and revolutionary spirit of Dr. Ernesto Sernas García, who was the defense lawyer that achieved the collective transfer, release, and acquittal of the 23 comrades. Just days after this ruling, the Mexican State disappeared him, and he has not been seen since.

We are publishing the poster for the political event and some postcards shared by our comrades to continue demanding justice for the former prisoners, punishment for the guilty, and the presentation of Dr. Ernesto Sernas García alive.
