FDLP-Ecuador: COMRADE WASHINGTON ESTRELLA. PRESENT IN THE STRUGGLES OF THE WORKING CLASS AND THE OPPRESSED PEOPLES OF THE WORLD!
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an obituary for comrade Washington Estrella, published by Defense Front of the People’s Struggles in Ecuador (FDLP-EC) on the 15thof April.
The Defense Front of the People’s Struggles in Ecuador expresses its deepest sorrow at the passing of Comrade Washington Estrella Mejía; a popular, democratic, progressive, and anti-imperialist fighter, whose life was devoted, with firmness and consistency, to the defense of the people’s causes and the interests of the oppressed sectors.
Comrade Washington Estrella was a member of the Revolutionary Union of Ecuadorian Youth (URJE), an organization that raised the banner of armed struggle in Ecuador during the 1970s. Later, in the 1980s, he was also active in a revolutionary organization, reaffirming in practice his unwavering commitment to the radical transformation of a society marked by exploitation, injustice, and the domination of the oppressor classes.
He was a tireless fighter for land and water, actively and directly involved in the expropriation of latifundia owned by big landlords in Imbabura, for their redistribution among poor peasants. His career was closely linked to agrarian struggles and the defense of peasants’ rights.
Comrade Washington Estrella collaborated resolutely with our Front, offering his steadfast and consistent support for the struggles and most deeply felt demands of the vast majority. His support was a clear manifestation of his political consciousness and his firm stance alongside the just struggles of our people.
His passing is a painful loss for his family, friends, comrades, and for all those who shared in his frankness, his militant solidarity, and his determination to contribute to the building of a new society—one that is democratic, sovereign, and truly free from all forms of oppression and imperialist interference. His example will remain etched in the memory of those who recognize in him a man of integrity, honesty, and sensitivity to the needs of the people—a man who remained true to the causes of anti-imperialism and social transformation.
On behalf of the Defense Front of the People’s Struggles in Ecuador, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, comrades, and loved ones, hoping they will find strength during this difficult time.
The memory of Comrade Washington Estrella will not be swept away by oblivion. It will live on in the struggles of the working class and the oppressed peoples of the world.
