Mexico: Weekly Newsletter
We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo on the 18th of May.
Following the clumsy statements by the reactionary Mario Delgado, Secretary of Education, and the juggling act by the woman who presides over the country to defend him, the old State has had to back down, announcing that there will not be an early vacation after all, that the school year will be respected without interruptions, and that the start of the vacation period will remain on July 15, thus concluding the 2025–2026 school year. As we had previously reported, Sheinbaum had to convene what she called the “First Extraordinary National Plenary Meeting of 2026” to determine whether to proceed with their underhanded maneuver or adhere to the official calendar in light of the adverse reactions among the population caused by the federal government’s unilateral decision.
As we mentioned earlier, this underhanded move used “the heat and the start of the World Cup” as excuses to end the school year and grant nearly three months of vacation. But in reality, its intention was to demobilize the teaching community and stifle the call for a boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, launched by the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE).
In this regard, the CNTE’s National Representative Assembly, which convened this weekend, has agreed to launch a national teachers’ strike beginning June 1 with a march and a national sit-in in Mexico City, thereby kicking off the boycott actions.
Other groups, such as the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico (FECSM) and the Committee of Mothers and Fathers of the 43, are organizing actions for those same dates, including a national sit-in from June 1 to 12, joining the call for a boycott.
Likewise, the Mothers and Families Searching for the Missing from across the country plan to carry out various actions to highlight that Mexico is a “champion of disappearances.” At the same time, rural communities and towns in resistance are planning other actions in the fight against megaprojects of dispossession and death in the context of the World Cup.
The call for a boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to gain momentum among broad sectors of the working class and the people of Mexico. We must reinforce this call with concrete actions that mobilize and organize the masses to fight against our class enemies.
Boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup!
General Strike of National Resistance against the old State and imperialism!
