Mexico – Mural Newspaper (PM29): Don’t Let the Ball Roll! (II)

We hereby share an unofficial translation on an article from the 29th issue of the Mural Newspaper published on the 2nd of June.

In our special supplement1—published on May 25 in the context of the teachers’ strike by Section XXII of the CNTE in Oaxaca—we mentioned at least five organized sectors of the Mexican people that are preparing actions aimed at a BOYCOTT of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These include , the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico (FECSM), the collectives of Mothers and Families Searching for the Disappeared, the communities and peoples resisting megaprojects, and the collectives against gentrification. Joining them are other groups that are joining the struggle with their own demands and the same sense of being rendered invisible and systematically attacked by the regime. Among them are the IPN strike, the struggles and strike calls by SUTIEMS, ASSA, SUTIN, SUTTEBCEO, and other unions, and new sectors of the population who, particularly in the World Cup host cities, denounce the spectacular projects of local and federal governments in contrast to the long-standing needs faced by working-class neighborhoods and communities that remain without water, street lighting, and basic services.

The ideological heterogeneity and diversity of their respective demands do not preclude joint action or the ability to coordinate with one another. On the contrary, their convergence occurs naturally and dialectically, creating fertile ground for the class struggle from the perspective of the oppressed. The World Cup presents itself as an important historical juncture for the unified (and also direct) action of the oppressed and exploited, and serves in large part to prepare the subjective conditions leading up to the General Strike of National Resistance.

The various branches of the CNTE will set up their national sit-in on June 1 in Mexico City’s Zócalo. They will be joined by the FECSM’s national sit-in, which supports the parents of the 43 teacher-trainees from Ayotzinco, as well as other groups from the National Popular Assembly (ANP). For their part, the Searching Mothers are preparing to arrive en masse in Mexico City on June 10 with the intention of joining the actions, while other contingents are finalizing their plans of action, prioritizing unity in their regional mobilizations.

From the nation’s capital, the response from the opportunist governments of Clara Brugada and Claudia Sheinbaum will evidently be provocation (the use of shock troops, thugs, mercenary gangs, etc.) and repression (riot police, the National Guard, the army, etc.); this is part of the security strategy announced to “shield the World Cup” and has Washington’s approval. The popular movement mobilizing around the call for a BOYCOTT must not fear a clash with the regime’s repressive apparatus; but must maintain the forcefulness of its actions, elevating the forms of struggle and organization by adopting the slogan of the General Strike of National Resistance against the old state and imperialism, which are the main culprits behind the situation afflicting the country and striking at workers and the people.
