Chile: Court Orders Mauricio Hernández Norambuena to Be Transferred to the Rancagua Prison

We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by Secours Rouge on the 25th of June.

A court in Santiago has ordered the transfer of Mauricio Hernández Norambuena, a former member of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), from the Special High-Security Penitentiary (REPAS) in Santiago to the Rancagua prison within 10 days. Although he was sent there in early June for security reasons, the court accepted the defense’s arguments regarding his advanced age and medical conditions.

The decision is based in particular on a report from the human rights office of Chile’s National Penitentiary Administration, which concluded that keeping him at REPAS could result in inhumane conditions of detention by international standards. The agency recommended his transfer and the continuation of his medical care and rehabilitation programs in Rancagua.
