Since our last update on the housing struggle in the Spanish State, the encampments in Puerta del Sol of Madrid continue, with thousands occupying the square. Big mobilizations have also been carried out in response to the death of Maricarmen Abascal, whose eviction at the hands of real estate company Urbagestión put the mobilizations in the Spanish State in motion.

Servir al Pueblo reports that on October 7, Maricarmen Abascal died in the hospital in which she was being treated. This came after she was evicted from her home in which she had lived for more than 70 years. The death of Maricarmen fueled massive mobilizations in Madrid, where protesters who were camped in Puerta del Sol marched to her residence, raising the struggle for housing in her name.

In Barcelona and Seville mobilizations were also carried out in the struggle for housing in response to her death.

Servir al Pueblo also reports on the ongoing encampments in Puerta del Sol in Madrid, who continue their struggle under the slogan “We are not leaving, we are staying!” In addition to housing, the participants in the encampment are vocal on the struggles of educators and for the Palestinian cause, Servir al Pueblo reports.

On October 5, an event was carried out denouncing the harassment and abuse faced by migrants in Ceuta at the hands of the police, army and various institutions.

The Revolutionary Committees published a video of a revolutionary of the Revolutionary Committee of Madrid holding a speech in the encampment of Puerta del Sol, denouncing the Spanish State as having the blood of Maricarmen on their hands and calling for the boycott of the elections. The post includes the slogans “Don’t legitimize their system of oppression! Don’t vote on November 29 – get organized and struggle!” and “We must organize the general strike on November 11 so that the yellow leadership of the bureaucratic unions doesn’t hijack it or use it for electoral purposes!”

Servir al Pueblo also reports that there are contradictions within the movement between those who want to increase combativeness, using the example of the struggles being waged in the streets of France, and the opportunistic and pacifist elements who reject any type of combative or even agitational act that may ‘bother’ the authorities.
