Criminalization Against Peasants in Ecuador

The Defense Front of the People’s Struggles in Ecuador (FDLP-EC) has shared a statement from the “Democratic Lawyers Collective” on August 6. They denounce the judicial persecution of María Práxedes Ortega Ortega, Piedad Erlinda Guaranda Tasgacho, and Reminton Wilfrido Escobar Arias, community leaders from Pasaje-Los Rios, Echandia, and Salinas-Bolívar. This is a maneuver by the company Curimining, which is the “branch of mining imperialism that seeks to invade the peasants’ territory in the canton of Las Naves.”

The Democratic Lawyers Collective denounces that “This systematic practice, known as ‘false positive,’ aims to eliminate all opposition against the mining plunder, especially targeting peasants.”

The FDLP-EC shared another statement from the Democratic Lawyers Collective denouncing judicial delays, as the hearing against several comrades was scheduled for August 6 but has been postponed for the sixth time. The lawyers denounce this as “an evident abuse of the process and a systematic delay strategy. Everything indicates a deliberate intent to bring down emotionally, physically, and financially the persecuted comrades, as well as the legal team defending them.”

But despite these delays and abuses, the Collective firmly states: “They will not exhaust us! We will remain steadfast in defending our comrades and the communities in resistance”.
