Vietnam – Phu Tho: Furniture Workers Struggle

We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by Vì dân phục vụ (Serve the People).

On August 18, more than 1,000 workers at Nitori Export Processing Co., Ltd. (Vinh Phuc facility) struggled to defend their rights regarding wages and working conditions.

Initially, the workers made demands asking the bosses to reconsider this year’s summer bonuses and working conditions in the factory. However, the bosses responded by sending threatening letters, accusing the workers of “violating the law” and threatening to “report them to the police.”

In response to the threats, workers gathered to protest in front of the factory. The bosses tried every means to repress and sabotage the workers, such as sending threatening ultimatums and planting spies to harass the workers, but that could not stop the struggling spirit of the workers, and the fire of struggle even spread to other Nitori facilities.

The local authorities and union officials were weak and could do nothing for the workers. They even colluded with the bosses to sabotage the mass strike movement.
