Brazil: Events for the 30th Anniversary of the Battle of Santa Elina

A Nova Democracia (AND) recently reported on various events held in several cities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Santa Elina. Over the past few months, numerous events have taken place across the country. On September 9, a film screening with discussion was held at the University of Brasilia (UnB). The event was organized by the Support Committee of AND, the Base Collective-Honestino Guimarães, and the Anti-Imperialist Committee Abreu e Lima.

The brutality of the repression was denounced, and the justified peasant struggle for land was highlighted, along with a tribute to the heroic resistance. The documentary “20 Years of Peasant Resistance in Corumbiara” was screened:

Pedro Batista, from the Anti-Imperialist Committee Abreu e Lima, gave a historical presentation on the struggle for land in Brazil, emphasizing the agrarian issue as a central and fundamental aspect in the country. The Base Collective-Honestino Guimarães highlighted the role of the youth as a shock troop, citing the example of the Battle of Barro Branco. Products were displayed for sale.

An event was held at the Federal University of Goiás on September 11, where dozens of students and grassroots activists participated in a gathering to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Resistance of Corumbiara. The event was organized jointly by the Brazilian Association of People’s Lawyers (ABRAPO) and the University People’s Legal Advisory Center (NAJUP). The crimes of the latifundium in the state of Rondônia against peasants struggling for land were denounced.
