AND Weekly Editorial – Tycoons celebrate the “victory” of Luiz Inácio
We publish this unofficial translation of the weekly editorial of the newspaper A Nova Democracia found here.
The “tax reform” of Luiz Inácio, Fernando Haddad and Arthur Lira was approved in the Chamber of Deputies, and will now be send to the Senate, and must be voted in November. The project its not different at all than which was idealized, many times wished and asked by Paulo Guedes [Translator’s note: one of the owners and founders of the Brazilian investment found, BTG Pactual, and economical adviser of the campaign of Jair Bolsonaro] and for the captain of the bush Jair Bolsonaro. Nothing explains so well the character of the “tax reform” as the reaction of the ideologists of the ruling classes.
The journalist trained by the Yankees, William Waack, said in his editorial: “From it [from the reform] a relevant gain of productivity for the economy, and with well-founded reasons, is expected, just by the fact that the tax question is one of the most important factors for a business environment that is very bad … Tax reform is today much more than a technical plan, it is a well elaborated formula: it is a result of a social consensus.”
Reinaldo Azevedo, soaked on personal compliments to the Petista head [Translator’s note: Reference to Lula], it was more extensive: “Everywhere it is said that the approval of the tax reform in the Chamber is “historical.” And, in fact, the adjective is not exaggerated. … It is also a great victory of the Lula government … The change, as Lula himself and the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad pointed out, interest above all, to society, hence the broad support that was received from almost all business and union representatives. It is also undeniable that the Planalto is mobilized in favor of change since the beginning of the government. ”
The former banker of the PT, Henrique Meirelles, also makes a positive assessment in stating that, with the reform, “who invests in Brazil will have better conditions to produce, which is essential to generate more jobs and wages and make the economy grow. That is only possible with a rational tax system, which we have hoped for 30 years.” Other unsuspected ideologists of the establishment, Claudio Adilson Gonçalez and Joaquim Levy (do you remember them?), They were also praising the efforts of Luiz Inácio. Bolsonaro was forced to stay out of praise, not for divergence of merit, but by politics. Also, if he could what would he do? He would praise his electoral opponent for the “success” that he could not – and did not want to – reach?
In fact, all these rogues are now praising the government and recognizing “its merits.” But why? Because the “tax reform” was terminated, it was for the establishment, a verification that it was not an untimely mistake to move Luiz Inácio to the government. The tycoons do not like to lose, and they think quite before “gambling.” And his bets were that, between a disruptive Bolsonaro (the far right) that prays in favor of “economic liberalism” and a mediating Luiz Inácio that criticizes “inequality”, the “financial system”, and from time to time the “Agro” [Translator’s note: reference to the big landlords of the countryside] (barely engaging in discourses and cosmetic maneuvers), makes the second worth it. At this time, the second option is more effective for business and maintenance of the exploitation and oppression system. Here it has been proven, it is a correct bet.
Regarding the merit of the “reform”, the only complaint of the central nucleus of the ruling classes is that it has not been more aggressive. In fact, it is a consensus. Regarding the consumer, there will be no reduction in the tax burden -what he paid, he will continue to pay, perhaps there is an increase. The “Agro” is still intact; as well as the financial oligarchy. The big industries, the FIESP [Translator’s note: Federation of Industries of the State of Sao Paulo] -previously “part of the coup” for Luiz Inácio, do you remember? – they made a strong campaign and will also have reduction of the tax burden. Anyway, everything is among friends.
It is pragmatism, the ideology of the bourgeoisie in the time of imperialism. Luiz Inácio is just a toy – he knows it well, so he wants to play his role in order to hold, postmortem, a biography venerated by the monopolies of the press and by public opinion. It is intended to be a modern “Getúlio Vargas”; although he, as a statesman, has not yet gone from the medium level, Luiz Inácio still lacks a lot to reach it. For the tycoons, the big bourgeoisie, landowners and imperialist corporations installed here, it is better to have an incorrigible opportunist in their hands, even if he says the contrary to the public opposition.
