Mexico: Weekly Newsletter
We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo.
A 72-hour national strike by the democratic teachers’ movement, led by the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE), is scheduled for March 18–19–20.
The main demands remain the same:
• Repeal of the EPN-AMLO educational counter-reform;
• Repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law;
• Abolition of the AFORES-UMAS system and a return to the traditional retirement and pension system;
• An effective 100% wage increase; among other just demands from the teaching community.
This day of demonstrations is part of the national struggle within the CNTE, where pro-government elements and opportunists continue to push for demobilization and reconciliation with the old State. Thus, with a national march from the Ángel de la Independencia to the main square, and with the establishment of a sit-in in the heart of the country and sit-ins in other states of the republic, it is expected that the democratic teachers’ movement will stop work in at least 20 of the 32 states. The CNTE’s action plan also includes protests at some embassies to condemn the genocide in Palestine and the imperialist war against Iran and other countries in the Middle East. We salute the CNTE’s 72-hour national strike and will join it without reservation.
Long live the national teachers’ movement!
No matter who is in power, the people’s rights must be defended!
