On March the 14th, 150 peasants from Pará and Maranhão gathered in the municipality of Carutapera to hold a People’s Assembly in Defense of the Gurupi River. This assembly is part of the Campaign Against Land Grabbing and Mining in the Gurupi Valley, organized by the region’s peasants to oppose violence by gunmen and land grabbers colluding with mining companies.
The Gurupi Valley, which lies between the states of Pará and Maranhão, is the scene of an intensifying struggle over land. These two states rank second and third, respectively, in terms of agrarian conflicts, according to the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT). A Nova Democracia (AND) reports that thousands of peasants “are stepping up their resistance and organization, especially since the founding of the Union of Communities in Struggle (UCL).”
Mining companies have significant interests in the region and act in collusion with latifundium. Examples of these imperialist mining companies include Equinox Gold, a Canadian-owned firm, and the Chinese imperialist company CMOC Group, which recently acquired the mines from the Canadian firm. The UCL and the Committee of Solidarity with the Struggle for Land (COMSOLUTE) condemn the attacks on peasants by gunmen.
In October 2025, approximately 210 peasants gathered for a Peasants’ Assembly against mining, and since then, dozens of protests have taken place. In response to the growing resistance, gunmen have stepped up their attacks, with several cases of assaults and even kidnappings and torture against peasants.
The March the 14th rally brought together various organizations, reaffirmed their unity and the need to continue organizing the struggle, and was followed by a march and a rally, during which participants chanted slogans in support of the struggle for land and anti-imperialist slogans such as “Yankees go home!”
