Turkey: One Partizan Reader among the Four Remaining Detained After Taksim Square Demonstration

Before a planned demonstration on Kazancı Yokuşu to commemorate those killed on May 1st in 1976, 1977, 1989, and 1996, police attacked, and 46 people were violently detained, with four of those detained are still being held, one of which is a Partizan reader.

Prior to the demonstration, the area around Taksim was cordoned off by police. The demonstration, carrying carnations, who went to Kazancı Yokuşu for the commemoration, was surrounded by police. Süleyman Keskin, the General President of Enerji-Sen, speaking in front of the police barricade, stated that they had gathered to commemorate their comrades lost in the Taksim May Day events, Keskin stated that both celebrating May 1st in Taksim and commemorating the martyrs of May 1st in Taksim are their legitimate rights, adding, “We will not refrain from exercising this right.”

46 people, including Partizan readers, members, and representatives of Partizan, Enerji-Sen, Öğrenci Kolektifleri, Umut-Sen, Devrimci Hareket, Kızıl Parti, İnşaat-İş, KATAŞ-SEN, Yapı Yol-İş, BDSP, PDD, DKDER, Mücadele Birliği, and Alınteri, were detained during the blockade. 42 have since been released, however 4 are still being held, with one of them being a Partizan reader.
