The National Investigation Agency (NIA) demanded on Friday that the court cancels the bail granted to Varavara Rao and the activist Sudha Bharadwaj. Both were accused in the case Bhima Koregaon, fabricated by the old Indian State.
Rao was granted interim medical bail by the Bombay High Court in February 2021, which was confirmed by the Supreme Court in August 2022. Bharadwaj was granted default bail by the Bombay High Court in December 2021. So far, of the 16 accused persons under the Bhima Koregaon case, 14 have been released on bail, Stan Swamy died in prison on 2021, and Surendra Gadling got bail but he remains in jail, as bail must be confirmed by the Supreme Court.
The NIA seeks to cancel the bail under the excuse that they both allegedly attended a meeting at the Mumbai Press Club, which was allegedly attended by other people accused in the case of Bhima Koregaon, on January 19.
The Mumbai Press Club already suspended three of its members for “facilitating” the meeting on January 19 and the NIA has been investigating the case, in yet another case of targeting those who protest the crimes of the old Indian State and against those who defend the democratic rights in India.
