Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo on the 20th of July.

On July 17th, comrade Jesús Plácido Galindo, a member of the Indigenous and Popular Council of Guerrero – Emiliano Zapata (CIPOG-EZ) and the National Indigenous Congress (CNI), was arrested. His arrest is the result of collusion between various levels of government and organized crime in Guerrero, one of the poorest states in the country, where the war against the people has a clear political and social agenda targeting popular movements and communities in resistance.

In recent years, members of CIPOG-EZ have denounced the constant attacks by criminal groups like “Los Rojos” and “Los Ardillos,” which have led to an escalation of violence, leaving 84 people murdered, 25 missing, and at least 2,200 displaced in the region, the bourgeois authorities not intervening to guarantee the lives and peace of peasant families, but instead giving free rein to latifundium and its armed groups to attack the population.

Today, with the arrest of our comrade Plácido by the Mexican army, the government of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirms once again whose side the regime is on—and it is not on the side of the poor.

In a brief statement, the authorities comprising the CIPOG-EZ have taken a stance on the case… “Jesús Plácido Galindo, son of the rain, represents the voice of our communities and the hope for a more just Mexico. His imprisonment constitutes an act of criminalization against those who fight for freedom and civic participation. We declare with absolute clarity: We hold the Mexican State responsible for whatever may happen to Jesús Plácido Galindo. We demand his immediate and unconditional release. We demand unrestricted respect for his human rights and constitutional guarantees.”

In response to this arrest, the CNI has called for days of protest in Guerrero and Mexico City, which began today. Once again, we demand the immediate and unconditional release of our comrade Jesús Plácido Galindo.

Full solidarity with our comrades at CIPOG-EZ!

Stop the war against the people!
