Brazil: ‘State Crime’ LCP Statement on the Mutamba Massacre and a road blockade against water shortage

LCP issued a statement regarding the massacre of peasants who were occupying a land in Mutamba on October 11, where an illegal eviction operation by the DECA of Marabá, under the Mutran family’s orders, resulted in the murder of two peasants, four peasants imprisoned and injuries to several others. The police, led by delegate Antônio Mororó, conducted the operation without a proper eviction order.

Various organizations condemned the crime, highlighting its premeditated nature and the complicity of local courts that justified the DECA’s actions, which contradict Supreme Court rulings. The LCP drew a comparison between this incident and the Pau D’Arco Massacre of 2017, emphasizing the importance of holding accountable not just the corrupt delegate but also those who enable such violence.

The statement criticized the federal government’s silence and inaction regarding the “Invasão Zero” policy, which has led to increased violence against peasants and indigenous people. The LCP called for unity among land struggle movements to confront big landlords and ensure land access for peasants, asserting that the ongoing struggles are being overlooked by the media.

The LCP concluded with calls for justice for the Mutamba land occupiers, support for the Agrarian Revolution, and solidarity with the Palestinian resistance.

Residents of Nova Morada and Vila Galvão in Senador Canedo (State of Goiás) protested against a water shortage, as several neighborhoods had been without water for three days. They blocked the GO-403 highway, set fire to tires and criticized the municipal management on social media, showing the brackish water that returned to their homes. In May, the Sanitation Agency of Senador Canedo (SANESC) received 8 million in funding to address the water issue, with an initial completion deadline of November. However, there is no official update on the progress of the works, and the water crisis continues to affect the population.
