Palestinian journalist Ali Abunimah faces repression in Switzerland

Ali Abunimah was arrested by the Swiss police ahead of a event in Zurich on Saturday afternoon, January 25. He was already questioned on Friday by the police for an hour. Electronic Intifada denounces that “Abunimah’s arrest appears to be part of a growing backlash from Western governments against expressions of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Last year, several activists and journalists in Britain were arrested, raided or charged using “counter-terror” powers. These include Asa Winstanley, an associate editor with The Electronic Intifada, whose home was raided and his computers and phones seized. Winstanley has not been charged with any crime.”
We share the article on this last repressive case:
The arrest of Abunimah sparked solidarity. After being held for three days, the journalist was released from detention by Swiss authorities and deported from the country. He was accused of “offending Swiss law” without giving any specific charge or detail about it. Abunimah stated that his crime was “being a journalist who speaks out for Palestine and against Israel’s genocide”.
