Norway: State General Attorney Appeals the Acquittal of three Palestinian Activists

Tjen Folket Media has reported that the State General Attorney has appealed against the acquittal of the three Palestinian activists who were recently accused by the Norwegian State due to a protest they carried out. As we reported, they were found not guilty of any charges.

After this clear defeat for the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST), the State General Attorney has decided to appeal the acquittal, despite the unanimous ruling from the district court. This will lead to a new trial in the court of appeal. The previous victory is seen as a victory for the democratic rights to expression and protest in the country.

The State General Attorney’s case was based on a law against “illegally hindering a member of parliament,” which implies the use of force, threats, or other criminal methods. However, the court found no evidence that the Member of Parliament, Sylvi Listhaug, was hindered, stopped, or threatened during the incident on March 13, 2024. The court’s ruling emphasized that the activists maintained a safe distance and did not engage in any violent or threatening behavior.

The prosecution sought prison sentences for the activists for expressing their opinions to a politician. This case highlights a broader trend of political repression against democratic rights in imperialist countries, where the State often seeks to limit critical voices against those in power.
