G7 Summit: Historical Avenue of Struggle – Part 3

Whenever imperialists decide to gather in their many summits, be it NATO, WTO or the G7/G8 summits, the people will unite and take to the streets against them. This year will be no different, as imperialists gather in the G7 summit to be held in Evian, France, so will anti-imperialists, ready to bring the struggle to the streets.

The G7 (previously G8, when Russia was still participating) summits have a history of being a significant avenue of powerful and militant struggle, as with the massive and militant anti-G8 protests that took place in 2001 in Genoa, Italy, or the 2003 anti-G8 protests in Evian, France. However, throughout the years many demonstrations have been carried out that are worth highlighting, among them the Hamburg anti-G20 demonstrations organized in 2017.

G20 Summit of 2017 – Hamburg, Germany

In 2017 the scene was set for yet another summit, this time the G20 summit in Hamburg, which gathers Yankee imperialism, the sole hegemonic imperialist superpower of the world, as well as many other imperialist powers, along with several lackey governments. As always, the people met up in the street to show their disdain, hatred and to struggle against the butchers and enemies of the people.

No red carpet would be rolled out for the imperialists, as tens of thousands had gathered in the city from all over the world to show their hatred and to wage struggle against the oppressors. Some estimates place around 75,000 demonstrators present in the city for the G20 summit in total.

Several forms of demonstrations had manifested throughout the city leading up to the summit, but on the day where the summit was to start a massive march had been organized, with many anti-imperialist, revolutionary, progressive and democratic organizations and individuals participating. The police had a heavy presence, with around 20,000 police deployed to contain the protests. At one point, the protests were attacked, with the police and its riot vans shooting tear gas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the protests.

The demonstrators confronted the repression despite this massive police deployment. An anti-imperialist bloc stood out among the protesters, forming part of the “Welcome to hell” demonstration, and fiercely combating the German repressive forces.

The crowd showed that their burning hatred for the imperialists could not be quenched by water cannons, as struggle against the henchmen of imperialism broke out. Defying tear gas, batons, water cannons, riot shields and horses, the protests fought back against the police forces, initiating what was to be the start of several days and nights of struggle throughout the streets of Hamburg.

This year as every year, anti-imperialist, democrat and progressive organizations and individuals will gather in open opposition to the expansion of oppression and exploitation waged on the peoples of the world, be it the genocide carried out against the Palestinian people, or the various wars of aggression, exploitation and crimes committed against the oppressed countries of the world throughout the history of these imperialist powers and the sole hegemonic imperialist superpower, Yankee imperialism.
