Mexico: Weekly Newsletter
We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo on the 8th of June.
It has been eight days since the National Strike launched by the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) on June 1. As we have mentioned previously, tens of thousands of education workers from different union sections and states across the country arrived in the capital that day only to be met with metal barriers and riot gear—a stark contrast to the “dialogue, Mexican humanism, and shared prosperity” promoted by the opportunistic governments of the self-proclaimed “fourth transformation.”
Following the initial clashes on June 1, news has emerged regarding the condition of the injured teachers, both of whom are members of the CETEG (Guerrero). Comrade Prof. Proceso González Columbo lost an eye, while Comrade Prof. Octavio Guerrero Jerónimo lost his sight completely in both eyes. The comrades’ injuries were caused by rubber bullets fired directly at the protesters’ faces by the regime’s repressive forces.
The national sit-in by the democratic teachers’ movement spans several streets in the heart of the nation’s capital, stretching from 5 de Mayo Avenue, Bolívar, 20 de Noviembre, Regina, Venustiano Carranza, República de Brasil, Callejón Héroes del 57, Belisario Domínguez, and other streets, with some encampments reaching the corner of Eje Central. Since the start of the National Strike, the CNTE has carried out various protest actions in the nation’s capital, such as blockades of major avenues, occupations of federal buildings, and marches, while also maintaining simultaneous actions in different states across the country, including the occupation of toll booths, federal facilities, airports, customs offices, and more. All of these actions have amplified the call for a boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
All this upheaval has succeeded in rallying more sectors of the people—some with a long tradition of solidarity with the democratic teachers’ movement, and others who are just joining the struggle, embracing the slogans of the revolutionary left. This is a great moment for the unity of the people’s forces!
In that sense, this Saturday the CNTE convened a Solidarity Forum among active struggles and strikes at the CNTE Section 9 headquarters in the heart of the country. Various unions, peasant organizations, popular groups, student organizations, neighborhood groups, and others participated, agreeing on the need to strengthen our forms of organization and struggle in the face of this week, which marks the start of the World Cup. The Front of the People – Red Sun and Mural Newspaper were present at the forum.
It is important to note that, as this week begins, new organized groups are joining the call for a boycott. Today, the mothers and fathers of the 43 arrived in Mexico City, accompanied by students from the “Raúl Isidro Burgos” Rural Teachers’ School in Ayotzinapa, and on June 10, thousands of mothers and families searching for their loved ones from across the country will arrive, along with other groups engaged in the struggle. On this very day, the Mexico City government deployed a heavy riot control operation at the Tlalpan toll booth to try to prevent the entry of the comrades from Ayotzinapa, which provoked an immediate response from the democratic teachers’ movement and the organizations mobilized at the sit-in.
These are decisive moments for the class struggle. Education workers united under the CNTE today represent the vanguard of the popular movement at the national level, and following in their footsteps are the teacher school movement, the movement of mothers searching for their missing loved ones, the peasant movement, the neighborhood movement, the student movement, and many others who are determined to ensure that the ball does not roll on June 11.
Surely the 4T government, just as in the days of the PRI and the PAN, will resort to repression by unleashing its “non-riot police” in Mexico City, and the despicable National Guard to fortify the Azteca Stadium (now called “Banorte”); as well as its shock troops (thugs, mercenary fan clubs, hooligans, and white guards) in the city and other states of the republic. May the reactionary forces be overwhelmed by a mass movement that is organized and has a tradition and history of struggle. Let the reactionary forces stubbornly refuse to heed the CNTE, the mothers searching for their missing children, and all popular sectors, while catering to oligarchs, narco-politicians, and high-ranking officials of the US government. All of this fuels the outbreak of the General Strike of National Resistance against the old State and imperialism.
