Brazil: Solidary Campaign for Venezuelan People Affected by the Recent Earthquake

The Solidarity Group with the Venezuelan People launched a fundraising campaign organized in Dois Vizinhos, Paraná. They are mobilizing to gather donations for Venezuelan people affected by the recent earthquake. Starting in July, volunteers are going door to door collecting supplies, such as non-perishable food, clothing, medicines, hygiene products, and other basic essentials.

The campaign is rooted in a broader support effort: organizers say the group was formed to help Venezuelan families who came to the municipality to work, and who later faced difficulties, especially around housing and the costs of everyday life. With limited assistance after the initial period of employment, families often end up sharing small spaces and relying heavily on people’s solidarity.

The group’s ongoing work also interlocks with cultural and sports activities such as the Manduco Dandara capoeira project, which on June 20th celebrated its first anniversary. “Manduco” refers to the wooden board traditionally used by Venezuelan working women to wash clothes, while “Dandara” pays homage to the historic Black Brazilian, a symbol of resistance to slavery. The project has served as a forum for popular issues and solidarity initiatives, like the fundraising for earthquake victims, exemplifying ongoing popular organization.
