India – RSF: Statement Against the Interrogation and Torture by the NIA Against Comrade Shouryadipta Sengupta
We hereby share a statement issued by the Revolutionary Students’ Front (RSF) on August 25.
Statement from the Revolutionary Students’ Front (RSF) against the summoning of long-standing mass movement activist Comrade Shouryadipta Sengupta by the terrorist NIA and the mental and physical torture inflicted on him during his appearance
On August 11, long-standing mass movement activist Comrade Shouryadipta Sengupta was informed by Shibpur Police Station that a notice has been sent from the NIA for his appearance on the next day, i.e. August 12. Since comrade was absent on that day for personal reasons, the NIA dictated him to appear at the NIA office in Kolkata at 11 am yesterday (24/08/2026). An attempt is being made to silence comrade by imposing a fresh fabricated case No/41/input/LWEC/NIA/26/170/2676 on him. Com. Shouryadipta was interrogated for about 7 hours yesterday. He was questioned based on a Facebook post. He was physically tortured undemocratically during the interrogation. Classist comments have been made referring to his institutional education and workplace. Not only that, the comrade was asked various questions about the Revolutionary Students’ Front (RSF). From which it is clear that the state is not sparing any effort to frame our organization in this fabricated case either.
It is clearly understood that this incident is part of the ongoing institutional repression of opposition political activists. Incidentally, on May 4th, after the official announcement of the seizure of power in West Bengal by the Brahminical Hindutva fascist RSS-BJP regime, fascist goons attacked and beat up comrade Shouryadipta. Comrade had previously been arrested and beaten up by the police for actively participating in the anti-SIR movement. We witnessed this same pattern a few days ago on June 18th. On that day, the terrorist NIA witch-hunted the houses of Comrade Tathagata Roychowdhury, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Students’ Front, and Comrade Jhelum Roy from the Feminists in Resistance organization. This method of suppression is very familiar to us.
Each of these incidents is actually exposing the ‘paper tiger’ character of the ruling fascist regime of India, which is terrified by the pressure of the ongoing student and mass movements across the state and the country. As an agent of imperialist power, the current BJP government is destroying one government institution after another in an attempt to fulfill its fascist agenda and suppress revolutionary political and mass activists who are obstacles to its goal. The RSS is eager to eliminate all kinds of opponents by using these two aspects — government institutions and fascist hooligans. That is why we see that the government is not taking any action against the attacks on various revolutionary, political, cultural activists and the overall opposition by the fascist goons, including the recent incident of Subhankar Das Sharma. On the other hand, the opposition is being suppressed by implementing several laws such as the anti-Goonda Act, NIA, UAPA. In addition, crimes against women, rape, beatings on minorities, mob lynching, destruction of religious places, evictions of hawkers and slums, bulldozer justice, police terror and the brazen display of Hindutva are increasing across the state.
It can be clearly said that with the active cooperation of the current government, the remaining democratic space in the state is being destroyed. Today or tomorrow, this attack will come on every democratic organization or individual. This situation cannot be changed without the complete uprooting of the fascist regime. The Revolutionary Student’ Front strongly condemns the summoning from the terrorist NIA on Com. Shouryadipta and the physical and mental torture he suffered yesterday in the name of interrogation. Oppose the undemocratic act of repeatedly unleashing the NIA on protesting mass movement activists. We demand that every political prisoner be released immediately and unconditionally. The government must withdraw every false case that has been deliberately filed. The government and the terrorist NIA must take responsibility for all the harassment of the activists. Along with this, we call on all anti-fascist, progressive, democratic organizations and individuals to form a united militant mass struggle to defeat the fascist forces across the country. We would like to remind you once again that at this moment, there is a need to form self-defense committees in the localities against the fascist goons too.
