Peasants Announce Blockades in Bolivia Against the Decree 5676

Next week, Supreme Decree (DS) 5676 will take effect in Bolivia, establishing an initial reference price of 18 bolivianos per liter of diesel for large consumers, agrarian producers, peasants, rice farmers, sugarcane growers, and transport workers. These groups and other sectors have announced protests, firmly rejecting the implementation of DS 5676.

Peasants’ organizations and unions from the four northern provinces of Santa Cruz (Warnes, Obispo Santistevan, Sara, and Ichilo) issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government to repeal the decree. There have already been protests in both Guarayos and San Juan, and peasants’ unions have warned that they will “escalate their pressure tactics if the decree is not repealed.”
