General elections were held in Nepal on 5 March 2026 to elect the 275 members of the House of Representatives. This new electoral farce has been boycotted by masses and revolutionaries across the country, causing even the cancellation of the elections in several places. The elections were called after the protests that shook the country in September, 2025:
The turn out of the elections has been of 58.07% of participation, almost 4% less than the previous elections. Standing out as well was the rejection towards the revisionist and former governing Parties, as with the “Communist” Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) which unleashed brutal repression on the masses in the protests of September, as well as the catastrophic results for the Party of Prachanda, the so-called Nepali “Communist Party”. Both lost dozens of seats in the Parliament.
These elections have been rejected by several forces, who called for a boycott campaign, such as the Revolutionary Communist Party of Nepal (RCPN), as we reported:
A Joint Struggle Committee was formed and announced a two-phase program for the election boycott campaign. The committee was formed by several Parties: Revolutionary Communist Party Nepal, the Communist Party of Nepal (Majority), the Scientific Socialist Communist Party Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal.
The masses have carried out several actions against the electoral farce that the local political Parties attempted to organize. The action of the masses have been decisive in many places to boycott the farce. In the Tamakoshi Rural Municipality-4, Dolakha, the elections were canceled as the ballot box were stolen. Masses assaulted election workers, who needed the protection of the police forces who opened fire against the protesters.
In Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9, Dolakha, not a single person participated in the elections, although there were 113 people called to vote. The same happened in Manebhanjyang Rural Municipality Ward No. 7, where none of the 701 people called to vote participated in the farce. They protested by stating that the necessities of the people, such as the building of a hospital, have not been met. The locals also boycotted the elections and did not attend to vote in 6 polling stations in Darchula, Bajhang, Dang and Okhaldhunga.

In Sigal, Lalitpur and Dilli Bazaar, Kathmandu, effigies of the Prime Minister Sushila Karki were burned by militants of the RCPN.

As a consequence of the actions to boycott the elections, several activists have been arrested. In Bharatpur, Chitwan, at least two members of the NCP (Majority) were arrested for allegedly “violating election code of conduct”. Three central committee members of the RCPN were arrested in Surkhet, another one in Kavrepalanchok and one member of the Political Bureau. Additionally the Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal, and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (Majority) were arrested, without a warrant order, all related to their role in the boycott campaign.
The campaign and actions organized by revolutionaries, as well as the low turn out of the elections, show how the masses reject the old order, not only a rejection of casting their vote, but active opposition to the whole farce taking place. They have also proven very clearly that they have the power to organize boycott actions, which have prevented the State officials from organizing the farce in several places.
