Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the Mexican part of the recent Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo Mexico.

In the midst of the class struggle and resistance supported by the proletariat and the indigenous and oppressed peoples, celebrations for the dead have been carried out in various territories of Anáhuac, a very own tradition given to us by our first grandparents and by who survived the hateful colony and the different imperialist interventions against our country. The day of the dead is named by our peoples in each of their languages: Mihcailhuitl (Náhuatl) or Xhandú (Zapotec) are some of these names.

These celebrations are not only about the respect for our family, friends and comrades who are no longer here physically with us and who visit us to live together again, but also about the cultural resistance against the imperialist hegemony of “Halloween” as well as against the cultural commercialization that we suffer. In that sense various calls brought together comrades from the people’s movement. In Mexico City,the Otomi Community that has the lands of the INPI in its power, today renamed as “House of the People Samir Flores Soberanes”, called for a Collective act against the war on the Zapatista peoples; in Oaxaca the Current of the People – Red Sun in the center of the city called to make the Tapete and traditional act with the lighting of candles in tribute to the comrades who fell in the struggle; in different SolRojista base communitiescultural activities were carried out such as mural painting, elaborations of Tapetes, collective offerings, marches and “muerteadas” [Translator’s note: a traditional theater play]. In all of them, a roll-call was made for the comrades who have been murdered or have passed away amid this struggle. Their names have been accompanied by slogans such as Present, present, in the combatant struggle!, among others.

We consider it essential to uphold, defend and apply this tradition as a symbol of cultural resistance of our peoples, honoring the memory of the comrades who have offered their lives for the New Democratic Revolution that claims the country to be free. Wherever you go, your memory will be with me, comrade! Those who die for life can’t be called dead!
