On November 2, a protest was carried out in Messias, Alagoas, by peasant squatters of the settlements of Lajeiro, Esperança, Baixa Funda and Pista Velha, who are affected by an eviction operation at the service of the Usina Utinga Leão. The League of Poor Peasants (LCP) and People’s Women’s Movement (MFP), as well as the National Front of Struggle – Countryside and City (FNL) and others participated in the protest. We have already reported on the peasant struggle in Messias.

AND reports that “The readiness for struggle and the affirmation of unity between the different settlements and movements of struggle for land was clearly expressed at the demonstration”. The peasants received a great support, and also it became evident that the isolation which latifundium, the judicial system of the Brazilian State and the press of the ruling classes want to apply to the struggling peasants in Messias, failed.

AND reports that before the mobilization took place, the LCP was delivering food to the evicted peasants of the area of Messias. This is a service which is not provided by the Brazilian State. At the same time, the LCP is helping the families to evaluate what they have lost.
