Barro Branco: Goons Defeated and Protest against Military Police

On the morning of December 5 the peasants of Barro Branco defeated a new attempt of intimidation by the goons lead by Guilherme Maranhão, who were surveilling and hanging around close to the Menino Jonatas camp. They assaulted a peasant very close to the school were the military police is living. The goons were totally confident about their security and even stolen a lantern from him. Meanwhile, the rest of the peasants were working together in the Encampment to rebuild the fences that are constantly destroyed by the cattle unleashed by the big landlord company Agropecuária Mata Sul. When they became aware of the harassment of their comrade, they rushed to help him and made the goons flee.

After that, the peasants rallied in front of the school where the military police lives. They demanded the military police to abandon the lands and to punish the goons. We have reported long time ago that the military police in Barro Branco has done nothing for the security of the peasants or against the goons, and this has been widely denounced by the peasants themselves and by the newspaper A Nova Democracia. They take care by themselves of the defense of their lands and their lives.

The police personnel, facing this protest by threatening the peasants, wanted to arrest one of them and pointed at them with a rifle.

The Support Committee to the Struggle of the Occupiers of Barro Branco has published footage and a video of the protest. We hereby share the link to the Instagram account and we strongly recommend to follow it:

The peasants stated that “the occupiers will not give up before the empty promises by the military police of doing more vigilance rounds” and that “they will strengthen and enlarge the mobilization to defend their lands”.
